  • What is Cataract

    Normal crystalline lens

    Opaque crystalline lens

    Cataract’s symptom: Blurred vision

Cataract is the clouding of the crystalline lens. The crystalline lens is like the autofocusing lens of a camera. It focuses an image automatically onto the retina. When the lens becomes opaque, it is called cataract. Cataracts occur most frequently in senior patients. Chemical changes accumulate in the lens protein as a natural degenerative process and the lens becomes opaque. Younger patients can also suffer from cataract especially when they have high myopia, diabetes mellitus or other inherited degenerative diseases.

  • Misperception of cataract

Many elderly think that cataracts must be “matured" in order to do the surgery. This is actually a misperception inherited from traditional surgery method. With modern advances in cataract surgery, the lens can now be removed from the eye at any stage of development, without waiting for the cataract to be “matured".

If you wait till the cataract to be “matured" in order to do the surgery, there are the following disadvantages:

Cannot conduct Minimally invasive phacoemulsification cataract surgery

Difficulties and risks of surgery will increase

Endangering the safety of the elderly while waiting

    May cause acute angle-closure glaucoma

The sooner cataract is treated, the more it will decrease on the recovery time and easing the risk of surgery. After implantation of a monofocal or multifocal intraocular lens, the patient can improve on the current situation of myopia and/or hyperopia.

  • Key Benefits of Femtosecond Laser Surgery
    Customization with 3D imaging

Like a fingerprint, every eye has a unique size and shape. Prior to treatment, the CATALYS Laser images your eye and makes precise 3D maps of relevant structures. This enables your surgeon to create a tailored treatment plan that is uniquely customized for your eye.

    Laser Precision

Your surgeon can use the CATALYS Laser to create laser precise incisions, including a circular opening in the lens capsule to access and remove the cataract. This precise incision helps your surgeon place the new artificial lens where intended.

    • Location of Circular Opening

    Gentle Approach
    • Crystal softened by CATALYS laser

Your surgeon can use the laser to soften the hard cataract.
Softening the lens with the CATALYS Laser enables your surgeon to remove the cataract gently.

    • Corneal incision made with CATALYS laser

If you desire to see well without glasses or contacts after surgery, your surgeon may recommend a tailored treatment that could include precise CATALYS Laser incisions in the cornea and a specific lens implant type.

    Not applicable symptoms

CATALYS is not intended for patients who are not degenerative, have certain corneal diseases or have implants in the eye, or are younger than 22 years of age. The patient should inform the doctor if there have been other eye diseases, injuries or surgery.

    Precautions

The patient must be able to lie flat still during the procedure. Patients must be able to receive local anesthesia or topical anesthetics. Patients must tell their doctor if they are taking any medication, such as taking a blocker (a drug that treats prostate hypertrophy), which may affect crystal degeneration surgery.

  • IOL type

replaces turbid crystal, suitable for correcting single distance vision

replaces turbid crystals, suitable for correcting near, medium and long range vision

replaces turbid crystals, suitable for correcting astigmatism or the same

  • Operation time and rehabilitation process
    Short operation time

Degenerative surgery usually takes less than 30 minutes to complete, and the typical CATALYS laser takes only a few minutes of the entire procedure.

    Fast recovery

In addition to strenuous exercise, there is no need to limit general daily activities after crystal degeneration surgery. Depending on the number of days to weeks after surgery, vision will continue to improve.

    Adverse reactions

Possible complications associated with CATALYS treatment include: mild white bleeding or redness in the eye, which may last for several weeks. In addition, there may be other risks associated with deltoid surgery, which may include, but are not limited to, corneal edema and / or abrasion, tearing of the lens capsule, infection, inflammation, eye discomfort, decreased vision. Please consult your doctor about all potential risks associated with crystal degeneration surgery.
