  • What is glaucoma?
    • Normal optic nerve

    • Glaucoma optic nerve injury

Glaucoma is a disease that destroys the optic nerve. In the 40-year-olds, about 3 people have glaucoma in every 100 people, and glaucoma is the number one permanent blinding disease in Hong Kong.

The main cause of glaucoma formation is the imbalance of secretion and discharge of the aqueous humor in the eyeball, resulting in an increase in intraocular pressure. Excessive intraocular pressure can cause compression and damage to the optic nerve, which can eventually lead to blurred vision, narrow vision, and even blindness.

    • Glaucoma can be divided into four major categories:

As the passage of water from the eyes is blocked, the water discharge is slowed down and the intraocular pressure is gradually rising.
The angle of the anterior chamber between the iris and the cornea is narrowed, so that the aqueous humor cannot be discharged, and the intraocular pressure rises rapidly.
The drainage pipe of the eye is defective, and the drainage of the water is blocked.
Glaucoma caused by other physical or ocular problems, such as "over-cooked" cataracts, iritis and other open-angle and angle-closure glaucoma are the most common types of glaucoma.
    • Symptoms of open angle glaucoma:

      1) No obvious symptoms in the early stage
      2) The surrounding vision is gradually narrowing
      3) Pipeline view
      4) Serious people can cause blindness
    • Symptoms of angle-closure glaucoma:

      1) Can be divided into acute and chronic
      2) Chronic symptoms are similar to open-angle glaucoma
      3) Acute glaucoma patients will:

      ① Vision suddenly becomes blurred
      ② Halo around the light
③ Severe pain in the eyes
      ④ headache
      ⑤ Heart and vomiting
    • In the event of symptoms of acute glaucoma, it is necessary to seek immediate medical attention so as not to delay the condition and permanently damage your vision.
    • Because chronic glaucoma is not easily detected early, vision loss may occur unconsciously, so glaucoma is also known as [vision thief]
    • Regardless of the type of glaucoma, if diagnosed early, it can cause permanent damage to the optic nerve, or even blindness.
  • Who is more susceptible to glaucoma?
    • normal

    • glaucoma

    • 1) Some people in the family have had glaucoma
    • 2) Deep myopia (> 600 degrees)
    • 3) Eyes have been traumatized
    • 4) High intraocular pressure
    • 5) Long-term use of steroids
    • 6) Have other diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, migraine or sleep apnea
  • Do I have glaucoma?

Because early glaucoma may have no obvious symptoms,
Regular eye exams are the best way to detect glaucoma early.

    Ophthalmologists can diagnose glaucoma by:
    1) Intraocular pressure measurement
    2) Visual nerve examination
    3) Visual field inspection
    4) Anterior chamber angle examination: to distinguish open angle or closed angle glaucoma
  • Glaucoma treatment
    • Eye drops :
      1) Eye drops for the treatment of glaucoma mainly reduce the intraocular pressure by accelerating the discharge of aqueous humor or slowing the cracking of aqueous humor
      2) Because each eyedrop has different characteristics, it must be prescribed by a doctor before it can be used.
      Laser surgery :
      1) Improve blocked water discharge channels and reduce intraocular pressure
      2) Generally suitable for those with narrower anterior chamber angles
    • Glaucoma surgery :

If the drug does not effectively control intraocular pressure, the doctor may consider surgery

Open a small hole in the eyeball to let the water drain away, causing the eye pressure to drop.

The catheter is implanted into the eyeball so that the aqueous humor can be drained through the catheter
